Beef, Fig and Red Onion Balsamic Skewers
These skewers are a great way to showcase figs which are in season in August. The skewers are packed with marinated cubes of beef, juicy figs and red onion that are grilled until tender. These skewers are Paleo, Grain Free, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, and Specific Carbohydrate Diet Legal.
I can’t believe we are almost half way through August and I have yet to post a recipe for the barbeque! Well its time to fire up your grill because I have an easy, and seriously delicious recipe for you.
I have been dreaming about this flavour combination for quite awhile, but when I finally had a chance to put it all together the flavours completely exceeded my expectations. Cubes of beef are tenderized overnight in a honey and balsamic marinade and then grilled on skewers with slices of crisp red onion and sweet figs. The soft and sweet figs perfectly contrast the red onion with its crisp crunch while the beef is melt in your mouth tender and dripping with juices.
When choosing your figs, try to pick those which are free from bruising and firm to the touch as they will stay together better when grilled. Fresh figs are normally only found in grocery stores between the months of June and October when they are in season (perfectly corresponding with the best time of year for barbequing!).
A platter of these skewers makes for a delicious dinner, but I enjoyed them just as much the following day mixed into a salad. These skewers are full of so much flavor they don’t need any additional sauces, but if you want to make them look a little more gourmet, drizzle them with a balsamic reduction or crumble a bit of blue cheese overtop. Happy barbequing!

Beef, Fig and Red Onion Balsamic Skewers
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp honey *skip for whole30
- 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 2 clove garlic crushed
- 2 tsp fresh thyme chopped
- 1 small white onion finely grated
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
- 1.5 lbs sirloin, fillet or tenderloin steak
- 1 large red onion
- 10 figs
Instructions
- If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for a minimum of 30 minutes to ensure they don't burn
- In a bowl, whisk together the honey, balsamic, olive oil, crushed garlic, thyme and grated onion until well combined.
- Cut the beef into small bite sized pieces and place in a deep dish or bowl. Pour the marinade overtop and put in the fridge to marinate for a minimum of 4 hours but preferably overnight.
- Set your barbecue to medium heat
- On a skewer place a cube of beef, slice of red onion and fig, repeat until full. Continue with the remaining skewers. Do not throw away the excess marinade
- Place the skewers on the grill and lightly brush with the marinade. Cook for approximately 7 minutes, turning every few minutes to ensure even cooking. Be sure to brush the skewers a few times with marinade while cooking.
- Before serving sprinkle with salt, pepper and thyme and serve.
I love that this recipe seems to hit all the right notes – sweet, salty, sour and textured. It’s the kind of flavor that I find absolutely irresistible. I can practically smell the aroma of the skewers grilling over the fire while I’m playing uno online, and I’m already dreaming about serving this at my next summer barbecue.
