Asian Brussels Sprouts
Looking for a flavourful new way to prepare Brussels Sprouts? In this tasty side dish they are thinly shredded and then sautéed in a delicious gingery sauce. This one pan side dish takes just minutes to make! These Paleo Asian Brussels Sprouts are Grain Free, Gluten Free, Vegan and Specific Carbohydrate Diet Legal.
As a child I never understood the purpose of brussels sprouts, they were always the last thing left on my plate after a turkey dinner. They were nothing more then a bland but healthy side dish which I had to suffer through eating twice a year on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Brussels sprouts are low in calories (55 calories per cup) and packed full of nutritional benefits. A cup of brussels sprouts contains over 240% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin K and 130% of your intake of vitamin C.
After testing many good, and some not so good ways of preparing brussels sprouts I have concluded that this is my absolute favourite recipe. The shaved brussels sprouts are soft and dripping in a delicious ginger and sesame sauce.
These paleo Asian Brussels Sprouts are a fantastic side dish with chicken or fish or is also great served cold as a salad (I recommend doubling the recipe to ensure you have some for the next day, cold leftovers never tasted so good!). You can thinly slice the Brussel sprouts the day before to cut down on time and then quickly cook right before eating.

Asian Brussels Spouts
Ingredients
- 400 grams or 0.9lbs brussels sprouts
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 2 tbsp fresh grated ginger
- 1 clove garlic crushed
- 2 tsp honey or maple syrup (Use 1tbsp Orange Juice in place of honey to make this Whole30)
- 1 1/2 tbsp coconut aminos (or tamari/soy sauce)
- 1/3 cup diced scallions
- 1 1/2 tbsp sesame seeds
Instructions
- Start by washing the brussels sprouts and removing the thick stems. Using a sharp knife thinly cut the brussels sprouts into shaved slices, to save time you can also use the slicing blade on the food processor to cut the brussels sprouts.
- In a large frying pan or wok heat the sesame oil on medium high heat. Add in the grated fresh ginger and garlic and cook until it becomes fragrant then add in the shaved brussels sprouts. Sautee for 3-4 minutes until they begin to soften and then add in the honey, tamari and scallions. Stir and cook for another 3 minutes.
- To serve place on a dish and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Fantastic! I followed this recipe exactly and it was a huge hit with myself, my husband and my five year old…that never happens. No bitter Brussels sprouts taste, all the flavor comes from the ginger and scallions. I will definately make this recipe again and again.
Hi made this for the first time last night – awesome and so very delicious. Can you provide the nutritional info – this would be extremely helpful. I follow a ketogenic WoE and used 1 tsp of powdered Swerve in place of the honey and it tasted great (not too sweet). Love your work 🙂 Thank you.
I’m so happy to hear that! I prefer not to include nutritional information for recipes and instead focus on just using wholesome ingredients but if you do want to know the nutritional information I recommend using this app RecipeIQ all you have to do is enter the recipe URL or take a photo of the recipe and it outputs the information.
Hi, I am interested in trying this using the date in place of maple syrup or honey and in your recipe notes the instructions were cut off about combining the date with something. Can you please explain? Maybe you are going to say warm water and then make it into a date paste not sure ?? Thank you in advance 😉
I was curious about the same thing! Look forward to seeing the answer to this and trying out.
Thanks!
My apologies! Ive updated the recipe now so it includes all of the information! You are absolutely correct, soak the date in warm water and then puree into a paste 🙂

Thanks Jan! 500 grams is approximately 1.1 pounds.
