Broccoli Fritters
Delicious and easy to make Paleo Broccoli Fritters made chunks of steamed broccoli and almond flour. These fritters are Grain Free, Gluten Free, Dairy Free, and Specific Carbohydrate Diet Legal.
I love dishes that taste indulgent but are secretly full of healthy things making them surprisingly good for you. These broccoli fritters are a guilty pleasure of mine, with a crisp outside and creamy center which tastes more like creamy cheddar and broccoli soup then steamed broccoli.
From what I hear, tricking your kids into unknowingly eating vegetables like broccoli is a big personal victory in the parenting world. Well these Paleo Broccoli Fritters are your new secret weapon. If you don’t have nutritional yeast on hand and are trying to make these fritters child friendly then you can add in 1/3 cup cheddar cheese for some added gooeyness.
These broccoli fritters are great served with a fresh salad and wedge of lemon for a healthy lunch or dinner.
If you are in need of an easy appetizer to serve with a glass of wine to guests, these fritters can also be made bite sized (because I jump at the chance to turn absolutely anything into finger food).

Broccoli Fritters
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups chopped steamed broccoli
- 3/4 cups Almond Flour
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup nutritional yeast (or parmesan for SCD)
- 1 teaspoons dijon mustard
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- Start by cutting the florets off the steamed broccoli and cutting them into small pieces. Cut the stalks into small, thin slices.
- In a food processor combine the almond flour, eggs, nutritional yeast, dijon mustard and garlic. Mix until well combined.
- Add in the chopped broccoli and stir through
- Heat the olive oil in a frying pan on medium heat. Once hot, use a ladle to spoon the batter into the pan to form small patties.. Allow the fritters to cook for 3 minutes until lightly golden and then flip and cook for 2-3 more minutes on the other side. Once cooked transfer to a paper towel and keep warm in the oven while you cook the remainder of the fritters.
- Serve warm with a lemon wedge

These were delicious! Crispy and cheesy with no gluten or dairy, low carb and versatile! I’ve enjoyed them with smoked salmon and also bacon and eggs for a delicious breakfast or lunch.
Yes, they do fall apart easily, as previously mentioned, but the trick is to process some of the broccoli with the batter so it sticks together better, and check the size of your eggs, which are the “glue”. Also, make sure you have enough oil in the pan and really let it cook on the first side before even attempting to flip. I had a very large perimetre pan so I had to use more oil. The first fritter that broke apart was still delicious! Thank you for a brilliant recipe!

Same. And they are pretty plain. Made me sad because I had high hopes. I think salt, pepper, and garlic powder (over clove) would go a long way in this recipe. I plan to adjust and perfect. I may add another egg to mine to hold them together. 🤷🏻♀️ I guess we will see.

Mine fell apart, too. So, instead of frying the second batch, I put the batter in a backing dish and baked it at 375 for about 20 min and then broiled it for another 7 min, which browned the surface nicely. After letting it cool I cut it in wedges and served it with a mixed salad.
I think I will experiment a bit with different spices, to make it taste a bit more interestingly.
What can you use to substitute almond flour?
Hi Heather, if you are not following a grain free diet then all purpose flour (can also be gluten free flour) would make a good substitute, almond flour is quite dense so you may need to add an extra tablespoon of regular flour to compensate. Alternatively if you are following a grain free diet then arrowroot powder should work (although I havent tested it in this recipe).
what if you don’t have nutritional yeast on hand, and don’t want to use cheese? These look amazing!
Thanks Michelle! They are really delicious. Cheese such as cheddar or parmesan would definitely be the best substitute but if you want to avoid dairy as well then no worries! The nutritional yeast is only added for flavour, leaving it out will not change the consistency. If you increase the amount mustard and toss in a few herbs/extra garlic to add a bit more flavour i’m sure they will work out well.
what is nutritional yeast?
Hi Sylvia, great question. Its a form of deactivated yeast that looks alot like fish food. It has a nutty/cheese like flavour and is used a lot by vegans/anyone avoiding dairy to give dishes a cheese like flavour. You can find nutritional yeast at most health stores or can buy it on Amazon. It lasts for a very long time in your cupboard so if you buy some you dont have to stress about finding ways to use it.
