Ingredients You Will Need To Make This Garlic & Herb Compound Steak Butter

  • Butter: Regular butter is the best butter for this garlic herb compound butter, but to make it vegan and dairy-free, you can use a vegan butter of your choice. Unsalted butter is definitely an option, too, if you’re trying to reduce your sodium intake.
  • Lemon Zest: Fresh lemon zest gives this a delicious acidic kick and tons of flavor. If you have leftover zest from your lemon, make sure to put it in a Ziploc bag, store it in the freezer, and save it for the next time.
  • Fresh Garlic: Use a garlic press to mince your garlic or finely chop by hand, but if you don’t have fresh garlic cloves, you can use a teaspoon of minced garlic or about 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, or cut back for a milder garlic flavor. For the garlic lover, if you want to take this to the next level, you could use freshly roasted garlic.
  • Fresh Herbs: I most frequently use fresh parsley and fresh chives for this, but you can also make your own personal Italian seasoning and use any combination of herbs like thyme, rosemary, or oregano instead for the perfect fresh herb butter. You can also use diced green onions in place of the chives.
  • Salt and Black Pepper: Kosher salt or sea salt are great options here, along with freshly ground pepper. Measure with your heart!

What About Leftovers

This garlic and herb savory compound steak butter will keep well at room temperature for a few days for later use, but I would recommend keeping it in the fridge and then bringing it back to room temperature when needed. This delicious compound garlic and herb butter will last in the fridge for 1 to 2 weeks. Simply wrap tightly in a piece of plastic wrap. You can also use a layer of wax paper and then wrap in plastic wrap. You can even wrap it with rubber bands to ensure its safety! This will also store well in an airtight container. For longer storage, this keeps well in a freezer-safe container or a plastic freezer bag for up to 3 months. If you want to save this in individual servings, you can also freeze in ice cube trays and then store in a plastic freezer bag or air-tight container.
