This Fresh Mint Sauce recipe takes just minutes to make and requires only a few simple ingredients. It’s a fantastic condiment to serve with lamb, steak or your favorite grilled veggies. Mint Sauce

Mint sauce has always been a classic way to eat lamb, whether lamb chops, roast lamb leg, or a rack of lamb. While using jarred mint jelly is an easy option, making mint sauce at home results in a more flavorful and fresh result that takes just minutes. Using fresh mint leaves gives an unmatchable flavor of mint that the mint jelly can’t give you, it’s so bright and fresh-tasting! Mint is classically used with lamb in multiple cuisines, particularly Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes. It aids in the digestion of rich meat, especially lamb, because it is a fatty meat that can be heavy, so the mint can provide a natural way to help digestion. Mint has a slight sweetness to it and balances the salty, umami flavor from the lamb. It gives the perfect balance to add to so many healthy recipes. To make this more healthy I’ve used a bright green chopped mint that is blended with honey and vinegar for just the right amount of sweet and acidic flavor for a perfect balance. You can mix things up and use brown sugar and lemon juice for the sweet and zingy blend. You could also add Greek yogurt or vegan yogurt for a delicious and creamy mint yogurt sauce.

Ingredients To Make This Mint Sauce

  • Fresh mint: Mint gives a bright and fresh balance to the lamb’s rich, savory flavor. I would not recommend using dried mint for this recipe. It is an inexpensive herb found at your local grocery store in the produce department. You could also use a common garden mint for this recipe.
  • Water: Using hot water for this recipe will help soften the mint and dissolve the honey. Using cold water could prevent it from blending properly and bringing out the mint flavor.
  • Honey: The honey can be exchanged for maple syrup or if you are Whole30 or Keto, agave nectar syrup. You could also use a little bit of sugar instead.
  • White wine vinegar: You can get creative with the vinegar you use. Try red wine vinegar, distilled white vinegar, or apple cider vinegar. Using balsamic vinegar is delicious too and would add a little bit more sweetness and give a really unique flavor.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt in this recipe balances the sweetness of the honey and enhances the flavor of everything.

Combine all of the ingredients for this easy mint sauce in a food processor or high-speed blender and pulse until the mint is broken into very small pieces. Transfer to a small bowl and serve immediately, or it can be made a couple of hours before dinner.

Can I Make This Classic Mint Sauce in Advance?

This is the perfect recipe to make ahead of time. You can make the mint sauce 2-3 days in advance and store it in individual-size containers for use with multiple meals throughout the week. It will keep in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks. It will also freeze beautifully for future meal-prepping meal plans for up to 3 months. The consistency may change somewhat in the freezer, though.

Is This Mint Sauce Vegan?

What To Serve With This Mint Sauce

Mint is a great accompaniment to skillet-cooked or air fryer lamb chops, roasted lamb leg, a rack of lamb, greek lamb meatballs or a lamb burger. While most people only serve mint sauce for lamb, its also fantastic on  chicken, beef steaks, and beef kebabs, too. It will also enhance roasted or grilled vegetables and would be delicious on top of potatoes.

How Long Will Mint Sauce Last In The Fridge?

If you are planning for the week, you can make this about 2-3 days ahead of time. It will last in the fridge in an airtight container for 1-2 weeks after use. After a while, the flavors may mellow somewhat. Be sure to stir before eating to recombine the flavors for next time.

Can I Freeze Mint Sauce?

Yes, this is a great item to freeze. You can freeze it in large portions in a freezer-safe container or bags; just be sure to make it airtight to prevent freezer burn. You can also store this in smaller portions in ice cube trays, silicone molds, or a little jar and then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months.
