Ingredients You Will Need For This Pear, Gorgonzola, and Prosciutto Bites

  • Pears: You can use any variety of pears that you desire for these. Bosc pears, and Bartlett pears are two of the best pears and are most common, but use whatever sweet pears you can find, especially during pear season when fresh pear is unmatchable.
  • Gorgonzola: Gorgonzola is just a fancy word for blue cheese. I recommend buying the blocks of blue cheese and slicing it, as the crumbled blue cheese will just fall out really easily. Saint Agur is my favorite! You can also substitute Brie or goat cheese if you don’t like the strong flavor of gorgonzola.
  • Prosciutto: Prosciutto is usually quite wide, so you will need to slice each piece in half lengthwise so you have two long strips. It is so deliciously salty and rich with an amazing soft texture and is perfectly balanced with the sweet pear and creamy cheese. I would look for a high quality prosciutto with no additives.
  • Arugula: Arugula is a deliciously peppery and strong-flavored green that gives a delicious peppery flavor to this recipe. You can use spinach if you want a milder flavor or Radicchio if you want a bitter taste.
  • Balsamic reduction: The reduction is made with balsamic vinegar but should not be swapped for regular balsamic vinegar. It is optional to drizzle it over the bites, but will give a delicious tart flavor to pull it all together. Making your own balsamic glaze is super simple!

How To Make These Pear, Gorgonzola, and Prosciutto Bites

Slice each pear into eighths and remove the core. Cut each slice of prosciutto in half lengthwise so that you have two long strips per slice, and finally, cut the gorgonzola into thin slices. On each piece of prosciutto, place the pear slices, a little blue cheese on top of each slice of pear, and finally, a few arugula leaves. Assemble by wrapping the prosciutto around the pear, cheese, and arugula. Insert a toothpick if necessary to keep the parcels together. Arrange in a single layer on a serving platter and repeat with the remaining pieces. Drizzle with a little bit of balsamic reduction before serving. Alternatively, you can prepare it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and drizzle the reduction before transferring it to the serving dish.

Ways To Modify These Pear, Gorgonzola, and Prosciutto Bites

There are a variety of ways you can modify this for the perfect way you want to serve on a special occasion.

  • If you don’t like the peppery flavor of arugula, you can use spinach for a mild flavor or Radacchio for a more bitter flavor.
  • For those of you who aren’t a fan of blue cheese, you can use Brie, Camembert, which is creamier than Brie, or Cambozola, which is gorgonzola and Camembert combined, as a delicious way to modify this!
  • You can also use Speck or Bresaola, which have a delicious salty flavor, as delicious substitutes for thin slices of prosciutto!
  • You do not need to use the balsamic reduction if you’re short on time or you don’t care for vinegar.

All About Prosciutto?

Prosciutto is an Italian dry-cured ham that is typically thinly sliced and served uncooked. The word “prosciutto” comes from the Italian word for “ham” and refers to a specific style of cured ham, which is often made from the hind leg of a pig. A thin strip of prosciutto has a delicate, slightly salty, and rich flavor, and its texture is tender and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. It is commonly served as an appetizer, wrapped around fruits like melon or figs, paired with cheese, or added to sandwiches, salads, and various Italian dishes.

There are many types of prosciutto. You can use Prosciutto di Parma, known for its sweet, delicate flavor and tender texture. Or you can try Prosciutto Toscano, which is a Tuscan prosciutto that is more intense in flavor and seasoned with a variety of herbs and spices. Prosciutto di San Daniele is one of the most popular and simplest, slightly sweeter and more robust than Prosciutto di Parma. You can often find these delicious prosciutto options at the deli counter of your local grocery store.

What To Serve Alongside This Pear, Gorgonzola, and Prosciutto Appetizer

These are perfect when placed on a charcuterie board and placed alongside fruit like ripe cantaloupe, fresh strawberries, delicious green olives, fresh figs, a salty crunch of mixed nuts, cherry tomatoes, chunks of good quality parmesan cheese, or slices of creamy mozzarella cheese with your favorite cracker. You can’t go wrong with a delicious dip like one of my favorites, Jalapeno Cottage Cheese Dip, with some fresh veggies, like red peppers, asparagus spears, or green beans. Add a sprinkle of pomegranate seeds and a few sprigs of fresh rosemary for a burst of color. You just can’t go wrong with charcuterie plates of your favorite things.

Can I Make This Easy Appetizer In Advance?

These prosciutto appetizers aren’t the best to make too far in advance, as the sliced pears will start to brown quite quickly. An easy way to get started is to prepare the arugula, slice the blue cheese, slice the prosciutto slices in half, and store them in a separate airtight container for later, so the assembly is super quick. You can also make the balsamic reduction for this tasty appetizer and let it cool before drizzling. This recipe does not take a lot of work and can easily be put together last minute.

What About Leftovers?

These easy appetizers will last for 1-3 days in the fridge when sealed in an airtight container or covered tightly with plastic wrap to ensure no air exposure. This will keep the pears from browning quickly. And here me out…what if you put these bites on a slice of crusty bread the next day for an amazing crostini.
